NC Section PIO Training and Resources
When time permits, I hope to add some of my own training and contact information to the NC-ARRL PIO web pages. For now, though, I'll point you to the main ARRL PIO Web page. There, you will find press kits, sample press releases, background information, and particularly an archive of the publication QSO Media. QSO Media is a series of newsletters with tips and examples of successes PIOs have had getting stories in the media. These are in Adobe Acrobat "pdf" format, and you'll need the free Acrobat Reader to open them. I recommend taking the time to browse them all. You'll also find the official description of the job of the PIO, and you can download the Acrobat version of the PIO Handbook. ARRL HQ has a lot of good resources for PIOs, and they're working hard to make them even better. I've met with Steve Mansfield N1MZA, the ARRL Legislative and Public Affairs Manager, and Jennifer Hagy N1TDY, the ARRL Media Relations Manager. They are both very enthusiastic about promoting Amateur Radio. And a new PR Committee, formed in early 2001 and Chaired by Diane Ortiz K2DO, is exploring new ways to get the word out. I'm proud to be a member of that committee, able to bring North Carolina's PIO experience to the rest of the country. Gary KN4AQ
