Remove the right side cover and peep inside. It's easy to get to the
shock preload collar from there. Using a long screwdriver and BIG hammer and
tap (read _KNOCK_) the collar around to the desired setting. It is
tight, and will turn easier if you get the rear tire up off of the
ground, but it can be adjusted either way (bike up or down).
There are 7 possible settings on it.
It comes from the factory set to it's softest position. I experimented with
my settings, trying everything from #1 to #7. I settled on position #5
when riding by myself, and I couldn't believe the
difference! The bike rides like it has a new suspension. When riding
2-up with travel baggage, I set the shock to
position #7. The ride with me@200 lbs, Debbie@115 lbs, and about 40 lbs
of luggage is great on bumpy roads that used to nearly knock our teeth
loose :-)
Another (and I think EASIER) way to
access the preload collar on the shock is to lift the rear wheel, remove the
cover over the front pulley (or sprocket, if you're still running one of those
greasy chains!), insert a long punch or straight blade screwdriver just
above the belt (or chain) to the collar. Less stuff to take off, and it's
a great way to access the collar on the shock.
If your shock is too soft, or you are still
bottoming out on hard bumps with the preload set to it's highest point (#7),
click the link below and check out the new Preload Improvement kit at
www.scootworks.com. WHen you get there,
click on 'Online Catalog' in the LH menu, select Kawasaki, then "Lowering Kits". This will provide
14 additional preload settings to improve soft shocks or heavily loaded bikes.
