It's quite simple, really. There is no way any team would put something that ugly in their logo if it didn't mean something to the locals.
"Now, wait a second," you may be saying. "If that's true, does that mean that hideous Titan is a local landmark as well?" And I have to concede, you have a valid point. While I remain convinced that a bridge like the one in the logo must exist somewhere in the Trenton area, I sincerely doubt that there's a gigantic statue of a man wearing shorts and hockey skates jumping over it. But if there is, then the daily commute in Trenton must be a hell of a lot of more interesting than my daily commute. Can you just imagine the radio report from the traffic copter? "And looking along Calhoun Street, we've got backups all the way back to OHMYGODWE'REHEADEDRIGHTFORTHESKATEPULLUPPULLUPPULLUPGODDAMNIT!"
The way the word "Titans" is incorporated into the logo, I will concede, is kind of nice. And given the presence of the bridge, I do like the rivets in the word even if they don't have anything to do with titans. But why, oh why do all these teams feel the need to put the city name below the nickname? Why not just leave the word "Trenton" out if it doesn't fit anywhere else in the logo?
All this being said, the name is okay. I don't think it has anything to do with Trenton, but "Titans" is one of those nice, classic-sounding names that works anywhere, and it has the added bonus that it's not actually in use anywhere else in minor league hockey. In fact, I'm unaware of any other professional team in North America using the name.
And if this is the best logo anyone can come up with for such a name, I think I know why they're the only team using the name.
Update
Jeremy (he didn't give a last name) sent me an e-mail not long after I posted this to point out the obvious thing I'd forgotten: that the NFL has a team called the Titans. I'm not sure how I missed this. Granted, I follow the NFC more than the AFC, but that's no excuse. Thanks to Jeremy for pointing this out.
