Oh, for the most part it's a great logo. The battleship is a strong element. The firing guns add to the effect, and it's only slightly weakened by the fact that it's firing pucks (we'll get to that later, though). The name is written in nice, basic letters (although I could do without the "L" being shaped like the blade of a hockey stick), and the five yellow stars add a bit of color while obviously fitting the name. So while it's not perfect, so far it's pretty strong.
But then you look at the background element. For some reason, someone thought it would be a good idea make a red circle the background feature. Even worse, there's a sunburst effect.
In other words, IT'S THE FLAG OF WORLD WAR TWO JAPAN.
Okay, I know it isn't actually what
the flag of Japan looked like, because the sunburst is inside the circle
instead of outside. But still. The effect isn't immediately apparent, but
once you notice it, it screams at you and won't shut up. You'll never look
at the logo again without the word "Tora! Tora! Tora!" running through your
head. And for a team named after the presence of one of the largest United
States naval bases in thw world, it's just wrong.
They'd have never come out with a logo like this in 1942, I'll tell you that much.
Now, let's get back to those pucks. It goes without saying that firing pucks out of a battleship is silly. The fact that the pucks are all different sizes makes it worse. The fact that even the smallest one is clearly too large to have come out of one of those tiny cannons makes it worse still. The "Rising Sun" effect I can forgive, as it was certainly an unfortunate accident. But the pucks had to be on purpose. It was a logo totally lacking in cheese until they did that.

That's particularly irritating because in the
history of the Hampton Roads/Norfolk Admirals, they've had four different
logos (the other three are shown at the left...from left to right, the
original ECHL logo, second ECHL logo, and original AHL logo), and not once
has there been anything cheesy before. The only questionable thing before
was their tendency to use the blade of a hockey stick for the "L" in
"Admirals", and that's a very minor offense. The current logo was a bold
move in a new direction, but the pucks just kill it.
Still, despite the fact that the logo has stupid hockey pucks in it, and
despite the fact that it reminds me of Pearl Harbor, it's still one of the
better logos out there.
