There are two teams in the American Hockey League called the Admirals -- one in Milwaukee and one in Norfolk. The Milwaukee Admirals are the older team since they've been around since 1974 to Norfolk's 1989, but the Norfolk Admirals are the older team since they've been around since 2000 to Milwaukee's 2001. Or something like that. I'd try to explain so it makes sense, but we're talking about a situation where two different teams with the same name came from different leagues into the same league within a year of each other. It's not supposed to make sense.

As if this wasn't confusing enough, there have been rumors of both impending doom swirling about both of them in recent years. Couple this with the loss of the Greensboro Generals in the summer of 2004 and the loss of the Fayetteville Force a few years ago, and one thing is clear: While we may support our troops, we do not support our teams named after them. Keep this in mind if you ever find yourself in a position to name a team. If you want the team to last, I'd play it safe and name it after an animal.

But there's no denying that "Admirals" is an appropriate name for a team in Milwaukee, and Milwaukee probably holds the distinction of being the city farthest from any ocean which has any business giving its team names with a naval reference. The logo, on the other hand, I'm not so sure about. It's certainly not a bad logo, but the colors look odd, and the name is too big in relation to the figure. And while I certainly approve of the idea of a drawing of an admiral in the logo of a team called the Admirals, I'm not convinced that's what we actually have here. The face shape looks more like a mafia goon than a naval officer. And he's got sideburns. Do they let you have sideburns in the Navy? It makes him look like an Elvis impersonator. A mafia goon who moonlights as an Elvis impersonator while wearing a Napoleon hat turned sideways. This more I think about this one, the more it disturbs me.

Still, we all know it could be so much worse. This is far from being a logo that makes me dance with joy when I see it, but it doesn't make me retch, either. And some days, that's all you can really ask for.
