What do you say when you're commenting on the logo of the team owned by Barry Melrose of ESPN fame? If you're smart, you say, "Nice logo, Mr. Melrose" and leave it at that.

Do you think I'm that smart? Neither do I.

I'm sorry, but this logo is so bad I'd have to comment on it even if I owned the team -- although, of course, if I owned the team then it would be changing its logo in fairly short order. (For that matter, Barry says he's changing the name next season, so I'm probably safe there.) This logo just hits on too many rules for me to have much nice to say about them. Even though this is probably my favorite UHL team (going back to the days when it was in Winston-Salem), the logo has always been horrible.

There's so much going on here that I don't even think I could fit it into one sentence. Let me try: The logo is a mutant humanoid with excessive muscles under feathers and a bird's head with human teeth breaking a hockey stick with the middle completely missing while magically propping up bloodsicles spelling a made up compound word with "Ice" at the beginning.

Damn. As bad a run-on sentence as that was, I still didn't manage to fit in the bit about the aviator's helmet. Or is it a race car driver's helmet? Who knows?

And by the way, do you see that logo on the bird's chest? It's hard to see unless you get the chance to look at an actual logo up close, but it's the "I" from the bloodsicles flanked by wings. It's not fantastic, but it's a lot better than the full logo. There's nothing sadder than a logo of a hockey player where the hockey player's logo looks better than the actual logo. When the afterthought thrown on to avoid too much blank space is better than the thing you were actually working on, what does that say about your priorities? Nothing good, that's for sure.

As I said, it has already been announced that the team is getting a new name next season, so all in all I'm satisfied. My favorite UHL team still exists, and as for their horrid logo, good riddance.
