My Amateur Radio Page ...

Welcome to the KD4WIW - Amateur Radio Page... My Tower and shack are located 2 miles south of Zebulon, NC. I hold a General Class License which I earned June 1993. Dave Hockaday, WB4IUY, was instrumental in my studies in gaining this license. A very good friend got me into amateur radio at the end of the Baseball season in 1991. Hugh Cashion, KD4WJD, came to me at the end of the season an told me that we were signed up for a class. I ask him when it would start and he informed me the next night... and the rest is history.

Hugh and I co-own the KD4WJD 224.800 repeater and the KD4WJD 442.400 repeater in Lizard Lick, NC, 5 miles West of Zebulon. We are soon to move to the water tower in Zebulon.

Click HERE for a look at our new site for the repeaters ...

It also acts as the hub for the Triangle East Amateur Radio Associations other repeaters. Hugh and I formed the Five County Repeater Network to sponsor these repeaters.

My station consists of a Kenwood TM-742, Alinco DR-592,

Icom IC-229H, Kenwood TS-690S, Yaesu FT-736R, RCI-2970, and Icom IC-229H and Kamtronics KPC-3 for packet. I am in the process of setting up my station so photos will be added as I up-grade. My tower is a state surplus tower that once called the N.C. Highway Patrol at Rocky Mount, NC home. I moved it to my residence with the help of a "really big crane" and the help of several friends, WB4IUY, Dave Hockaday, and KE4YKG, Josh Bunn. The tower is a 145' self-supported tower with a 20' mast that extends 13 feet above the platform with the rotor 7' below. The platform is an 8 sided 5' platform allowing work at the top without being cramped. Check out my Tower page! I have a tri-band 2m,220, 440 vertical Diamond antenna at the top of the mast. I also have a 220 yagi, 2-440 yagi, 2 meter yagi, and 6 meter yagi mounted below the Diamond. All the yagis are made by M2 square. The tower project allows me to look over the country side well above tree level. Zebulon to the North , Nash County to the East, Wendell to the West, Johnston County to the South, and the house way below!!!

The antennas are fed by 2 runs of 1 5/8" and 4 runs or 7/8" hardline. All are grounded at the tower base thru PolyPhasers. <

For those wondering the tower withstood the hurricane force winds of Fran in 1996. But with 28 yards of concrete I wasn't too concerned ... Yeah !!!

I'm a full member in the ARRL and South Eastern Repeater Association (SERA). I also am a member of the Triangle East Amateur Radio Association (TEARA), Five County Repeater Network, Tucson Amateur Packer Radio Corp (TAPR), and the Triangle ATV Association.

My GPS fix is 35 48'21.3" N and 078 17' 42.2 W. I live 0.9 miles east of NC 96 and 0.3 miles south of SR 2347 (1 miles south of Zebulon). See you on the Air Waves!!!
