Brown Mountain Lights in the Studio November 19-20, 2005
Sessions from the Historic Alexander Building in Downtown Raleigh - Extra special thanks to Greg Hatem of Empire Properties and Brad Magner of Odd Fellows Design.
The Brown Mountain Lights entered the studio on Saturday November 19, 2005 to record their first studio effort following the 2003 live debut "Late Show at the Cave". Dave Tilley from The Bogue Sound Studios was behind the board capturing the sounds and engineering. 12 basic tracks were committed to tape Saturday and Sunday and overdubs will follow in December and January. Below are some photos captured by the band between takes. The space itself was the entire 6th floor (and some of the 7th floor balcony) of the aforementioned Alexander Building, built in 1907 and was North Carolina's first skyscraper. By looking out the north windows towards the State Capitol, we could see the alley where the kitchen once stood where the 17th President of the U.S. Andrew Johnson was born. In addition to some vintage 50's microphones and vacuum tube
preamplifiers, the whole weekend had a really retro vibe to it. The room itself is now offices to architects and visual design offices, but it was originally The Masonic Temple Ballroom. Several of the columns and room design remain and are in the photos below. The place really reminded me of a more upscale loft of where Wilco recorded Yankee Hotel Foxtrot as depicted in the film I Am Trying to Break Your Heart. Luckily our sessions were much happier. Stay tuned to this space for more news on the cd's release.
