Thanksgiving, 2000
Balsam, NC
introduction

The Balsam Moutain Inn is a rustic, not-that-small bed & breakfast (and lunch & dinner) Inn, at Balsam, North Carolina.  The town of Balsam is a Post Office, a closed store, and a few dozen houses, right next to the Blue Ridge Parkway, west of Ashville.

That's where we spent Thanksgiving, 2000.

The weather outside was chilly and gray.  Inside was warm and cozy.  Seems like everyone in the Inn gathered around the fireplaces in the lobby, talking, rocking, reading and relaxing.  No TV, no phones, no computers (well, somebody had a laptop - I heard the Windows boot-up music in the background once).

The pictures to the right shows us (Gary, Cyndi, Mac and Anne) warming up by the fire, and all the chairs in the lobby.  There's another fireplace and sitting area right behind the one you see here.  There is also a library and a game room.

Here's the view from the porch, showing where the Smoky Mountains get their name.

Nobody took advantage of the rockers on the porch, though.  Too chilly.  They're probably more popular in the summer.
