Thanksgiving, 2000
Balsam, NC
excursion

Friday's activity was a 4 hour ride on the Great Smokey Mountains Railroad, from Dillsboro out to a trestle in the middle of no place, along Fontana Lake, and back.
On this chilly November day, most of the railroad cars were enclosed.  We laughed when we saw the one open car near the front of the train.

But it turns out the view from that car was compelling enough to make a lot of people endure the wind and chill.  And it really wasn't that bad, if you were dressed for it.

In the summer, most of the train is made up of open cars.

If we had made reservations a week in advance, we could have ordered a gourmet meal.  Lacking that, the cafe/gift store car kept us from starving.  As if anyone was still hungry after Thanksgiving dinner, and this morning's breakfast.  Cyndi got some nachos, just to be able to munch.
