Hawaii Trip - 2002

This was our third trip to Hawaii.  The first was back in 1998.  Where are the pictures from those other two trips?  There are so many, they were overwhelming, and I never got around to putting them on the web.  I'll see if I can spinkle a few of them in this web set.

We've been to the six main islands, now - Kauai, Oahu, Molakai, Lanai, Maui and "the big island" - Hawaii.  Most of our time has been on Maui.

Some very brief geology and history:

The islands are really just big volcanoes.  Kauai is the oldest, and Hawaii is the newest, separated in time by millions of years.  The only currently active volcano is on Hawaii, though Haleakala on Maui is considered dormant, not extinct, and last erupted about 200 years ago.  Erosion has worn down and "rounded" the mountains on Kauai and Oahu so they top out below 5000 feet.  Haleakala on Maui still reaches 10,000 feet, and the two big mountains on Hawaii, Mouna Loa and Mouna Kea, near 14,000 feet.  At least, that's what's above water.  There's a lot more below the ocean surface - another 20,000 feet or so to reach the ocean floor.

A "new" island is brewing south of the big island.  Don't buy any property there, or book a flight to see the active volcano.  It's still thousands of feet below the surface, and thousands of years from becoming an island.  But it's on its way.

Now, the picture book tour.  Ready so far:
