Fellow Kitty-Kats,
Litter box habits are very important to kitty kats as
well as to their moms
and dads, and here's a reminder
of all the things you should know:
1. Get in a newly cleaned box immediately to show your appreciation for the
cleanliness. If you can't muster up anything to leave in it, get in it
anyway. They will get the idea.
2. WE know that indiscriminate use of other places is sometimes caused by a
urinary tract infection or OTHER health problem, and that as much as we
hate going, we should see our vet.
3. Sometimes we don't use our box because we feel sad or frustrated. They
need to know that we aren't punishing them, but that we are trying to let
them know how we feel. We can't speak human English and our communication
problems need to be understood. If they would only think of us in similar
terms to a toddler, they could figure out what our problem really is.
4. They should know we need plenty of privacy. Some of us like covered
litter boxes, and some of us like our box in a quiet and private place.
Having a choice is really helpful. In our house, "she" is amused and
befuddled because we have arbitrarily dedicated one litter box to "poo
only" and even the new arrivals get the picture right away.

We held a seminar and our group discussed how we might contribute to the
well being of other Kitty Kats by doing a "top ten" of the reasons why we
don't use the box:
1. Our claws have been removed.
2. We are not spayed or neutered.
3. We are territorial and frustrated at the way other Kitty Kats in our
house treat us.
4. We don't like the location of our litter box, particularly if it is too
close to our food.
5. Our box isn't clean enough. While we appreciate our pet people cleaning
it for us, we don't want it to get too dirty. How would they feel if they
had to use an unflushed commode?
6. We don't like our litter. It sticks to our feet (ick!) or it smells
funny. Incidentally, Kitty Kats that have been accustomed to using the
outdoors but become indoor-only cats, appreciate a cup or so of just
regular dirt in their box for a while until they understand the scent of
their box.)
7. We become frustrated over our routine being interrupted.
8. We need to (O Gosh I Hate To Say This!) see our vet.
9. We can become frustrated over many things, and hopefully our pet humans
will try to think really hard about why and help us. We don't really WANT
to be bad. We just want to be heard.
10. Please never rub our noses in our "stuff" when trying to housetrain us.
Give us a little respect!

If you have questions, you can E-mail Mongo Jerry or Simon,
as we are the only two of the five in this house that
know how to read. All 5 of us, though, use our box, and on the one or two
occasions when we haven't, "she" doesn't know who to scold and instead,
thinks really hard about why it happened and corrects the problem.
