Probably born in Wake County, but was practicing law in Bexar County, Texas, at the outbreak of the war. Enlisted at age 41. Appointed Colonel on July 18, 1861. Present or accounted for until wounded at Drewry's Bluff, Virginia, on or about May 15, 1864. Returned to duty subsequent to January 1, 1865. Captured at Dinwiddie Court House, Virginia, February 5, 1865. Confined at Old Capitol Prison, Washington D.C., until transferred to Fort Delaware, Delaware, March 1, 1865. Released at Fort Delaware on July 24, 1865, after taking the Oath of Allegiance. Name appears on a letter of recommendation signed by Governor Zebulon B. Vance which states that Colonel Clarke "has repeatedly been mentioned in terms of praise by the generals commanding" his unit, and his regiment has been "very highly spoken of for its discipline and efficiency".

Resided in Granville County. Appointed Lieutenant Colonel on July 18, 1861. Present or accounted for until he was defeated for reelection on May 16, 1862.

HARRIS, JOHN L.

Previously served as Captain of Company H of this regiment. Elected Lieutenant Colonel and transferred to the Field and Staff on May 16, 1862. Present or accounted for until wounded at Fredericksburg, Virginia, December 13, 1862. Returned to duty on June 16, 1863. Present or accounted for until wounded in the right thigh at or near Fort Stedman, Virginia, on or about March 25, 1865. Hospitalized at Petersburg, Virginia, where he was captured by the enemy on April 3, 1865. Confined at various Federal hospitals until May 14, 1865, when he was hospitalized at City Point, Virginia. COMPANY K

This company, known as the "Poplar Spring Grays," was raised in Franklin County and was enlisted at Louisburg, on June 17, 1861. It was then mustered into state service and assigned to the 24th North Carolina Troops (14th North Carolina Volunteers) as Company K.

Resided in Franklin County and enlisted in Halifax County at age 17, on or about May 14, 1862, for the war as a substitute for Edward B. Coxe. Present or accounted for until wounded at Sharpsburg, Maryland, September 17, 1862. Returned to duty prior to November 1, 1862. Present or accounted for through December, 1863. Company records do not indicate that he served with the company subsequent to December 31, 1863; however, Confederate medical records indicate he was hospitalized at Petersburg, Virginia, April 11, 1865, with a gunshot wound of the left thigh. Place and date wounded not reported. In conflict with this is a report from the Raleigh Daily Confederate dated April 30, 1864, that lists him as killed in action at Plymouth , NC, April 18-20, 1864.

BAKER, JAMES H., Sergeant

Resided in Franklin County where he enlisted at age 23 on June 17, 1861. Mustered in as Sergeant. Present or accounted for until wounded in the abdomen at or near Fort Stedman, Virginia, on or about March 25, 1865. Hospitalized at Petersburg, Virginia. Captured in hospital at Petersburg on April 3, 1865. Died in hospital at Petersburg on April 13, 1865, of wounds.

BAKER, JOHN A., 1st Sergeant

Resided in Franklin County and enlisted in Halifax County at age 18 on August 6, 1861. Mustered in as Private and was promoted to 1st Sergeant on May 15, 1862. Wounded at Plymouth, NC, April 18-20,1864. Right leg was amputated below the knee. Reported absent wounded through February, 1865.

Resided in Wake County and enlisted in Franklin County at age 31 on June 17, 1861. Present or accounted for until wounded in the right hip and captured at Saylor's Creek, Virginia, April 6, 1865. Confined at various Federal hospitals until May 9, 1863, when he was hospitalized at Fort McHenry, Maryland. Died in hospital at Fort McHenry on May 21, 1863, of "secondary hemorrhage with effusion into abdomen."

Enlisted at Chaffin's Bluff, Virginia, June 15, 1864, for the war. Present or accounted for until wounded in the right elbow at or near Fort Stedman, Virginia, March 25, 1865. Hospitalized at Petersburg, Virginia, where he was captured on April 3, 1865. Died in hospital at Petersburg on April 29, 1865, of wounds.

Present or accounted for until wounded in the foot at Plymouth on April 20, 1864. Commended for bravery while serving as Color Bearer at Plymouth, where he "led the regiment and though severely wounded in the foot did not leave the field until he had planted his flag on the ramparts of the captured town." Appointed Ensign (1st Lieutenant) on or about July 18, 1864, and transferred to the Field and Staff of this regiment. Wounded in the right eye and the left arm at Globe Tavern, Virginia, on July 21, 1864.

CLIFTON, DAVID G., Musician
