Categories: Entries will be accepted in all categories listed for the 1998 AHA National Homebrew Competition (copy included). Cider and meads will not be eligible for Best of Show. Additionally, there will be a "Just Good Beer" category for beers not corresponding to a specified style, and which will be judged by consensus of those wishing to participate. "Just Good Beer" entries are not eligible for Best of Show.
Judging: Judging will take place at Southend Brewery & Smokehouse (tentative) Raleigh, NC, beginning promptly at 10 am on Saturday, March 13 Every effort will be made to have all entries judged by qualified participants in the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP).
- Apprentice judges are welcome and will be paired with experienced judges.
- Out of town judges and stewards will be our guests for lunch.
- Those wishing to judge or steward should contact the Judge Director (see below).
- Judge and steward experience points will be reported to the BJCP.
- Judges and stewards are expected to arrive not later than 9:30 am.
- Some categories may be condensed with categories of similar style for determining 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners, at the organizers' discretion.
- Conversely, categories in which a large number of entries are received in each of several sub-categories may be expanded to determine ribbon winners and Best of Show entries.
- Our commitment to you: We will have your score sheets in the mail to you within 72 hours following the competition.
Prizes: 1st, 2nd & 3rd place beers in each category will receive a ribbon. 1st, 2nd & 3rd place Best of Show beers will receive a ribbon. Additionally, the highest scoring "Just Good Beer" will be recognized with a ribbon.

- Local entries may be dropped off at: BrewBetter Supply , 10207 Chapel Hill Rd., Morrisville, NC, (919-467-8954), or at American Brewmaster, 3021-5 Stonybrook Dr., Raleigh, NC, (919-850-0095).
- Pre-registered beers may be hand delivered the morning of the competition, to the competition site. To pre-register, the entry form and full entry fees must be received at the ship-to address or one of the drop-off locations by the entry deadline. Beers must be at the competition site by 9:00 am the day of the competition. Late arrivals will be disqualified. No-shows will not receive a refund. The entrant is responsible for the condition of his/her entry(ies). WE CAN NOT ACCEPT ENTRIES THE DAY OF THE COMPETITION UNLESS THEY HAVE BEEN PRE-REGISTERED.

Should consist of two (2) bottles, each with a completed bottle ID form attached by a rubber band, and accompanied by a completed entry form and payment. A third bottle may be submitted, if desired. (Meads may be submitted in a single champagne-style bottle.)
- Entry fee: $6 for the first entry, and $5 for each additional entry. No limit on entries. Please enclose a single check for the total fees made payable to "CARBOY"
Bottles: Each bottle must be plain glass, brown or green, 10 to 16 ounces in volume, and crown capped. Bottles and caps must be free of anything which is sufficiently unique that it could identify a brewer to a judge. This may include raised lettering, labels, unique bottle shapes or the like. No swing-top bottles. Bottle caps should have any distinguishing marks completely blacked out. (Use of brown, long-neck, 12 oz. bottles is encouraged but not required.) Bottles not meeting these guidelines will be disqualified, and ineligible for award. (They may be judged at the discretion of the competition organizers.) NOTE: Reusable containers, including "Carbonator" type devices CAN NOT be returned.
North Carolina Homebrewer of the Year: This is the first competition in the series leading to the 1999 North Carolina Homebrewer of the Year award (the others being the TRUB Open sponsored by the TRiangle's Unabashed homeBrewers, and the U.S. Open sponsored by the Carolina Brewmasters). North Carolina Homebrewer of the Year is awarded to the North Carolina homebrewer who receives the greatest number of points, earned by placing in the three annual North Carolina competitions. Contact the Shamrock organizers for more information. Additionally, placing in the Shamrock Open qualifies a brewer to compete in the Southeastern Homebrewer of the Year competition, and is a great warm-up for the first round AHA Nationals!
